Filecoin Completes Solstice Upgrade, Links Service Rewards to Paid Demand
Filecoin’s NV29 Solstice upgrade is complete. FIP-0118 replaces Fil+ approvals with a new sector-weighting model and demand-linked service rewards.
Filecoin's official status page marked the mainnet NV29 Solstice upgrade maintenance completed at 13:59 UTC on October 19, 2026. The upgrade changes how storage participation and block rewards work, aiming to connect incentives more closely with services that customers pay to use. A sector-weighting change, not a tenfold return promise
Under FIP-0118, new sectors receive 10× quality-adjusted power without the previous Filecoin Plus DataCap allocation process. Existing sectors have a path to opt in. The initial pledge mechanism remains unchanged. Quality-adjusted power is a protocol weighting measure; it is not a promise of ten times the cash revenue or investment return.
The reform also separates newly minted block rewards into consensus, service and burn streams. Service Orchestrators are intended to help turn infrastructure into products, integrations and paying usage. Growth in the service allocation is gated by payment activity through Filecoin Pay, with a bootstrap phase and governance rules described in the specification.
Completion is only the start of the commercial test
The specification includes a burn stream for residual rewards. That rule should not be mistaken for evidence of a particular quantity already burned or a guaranteed reduction in market selling. The upgrade's completion also does not establish how much new customer revenue it will generate. OrangeX.com Analysis
Solstice shifts the question from how much capacity exists toward how that capacity attracts paid services. Useful evidence will include settled payment volume, repeat customers and the way governance distinguishes real demand from self-dealing. Incentive changes can support product development, but adoption, provider economics and FIL price outcomes still depend on execution and market conditions.
